[edit] Akalabeth: World of Doom Intro Text
In the Ranja Gorge, there are several Corman (Apple ][) personal computers that are accessible by pressing Use while they are targeted. Most of them tell the back story of how the Corman came to be on Foreas. On one of the computers, however, the following message appears:
- Loading Game...
- MANY, MANY YEARS AGO THE DARK LORD MONDAIN, ARCHFOE OF BRITISH, TRAVERSED THE LANDS OF AKELABETH SPREADING EVIL AND DEATH AS HE PASSED. BY THE TIME MONDAIN WAS DRIVEN FROM THE LAND BY BRITISH, BEARER OF THE WHITE LIGHT, HE HAD DONE MUCH DAMAGE UNTO THE LANDS.
- 'TIS THY DUTY TO HELP RID AKELABETH OF THE FOUL BEASTS WHICH INFEST IT, WHILE TRYING TO STAY ALIVE!!
The text is the introduction to Akalabeth: World of Doom, sometimes called "Ultima 0," the first game published by Executive Producer of Tabula Rasa Richard Garriot. The characters of Mondain and Lord British would appear later in Ultima I and play prominent roles throughout the series. Richard Garriot continues to go by the pseudonym "Lord British" even today.
Note that the word Akalabeth is misspelled as "Akelabeth" in the text on the computer screen.[1]
