Chaingun
From TaRapedia
[edit] Overview
The Chain Gun is the first high speed weapon available to the player. It features a very fast rate of fire, low damage per shot, short range, and a variety of damage types. Due to its rate of fire, it is quite costly in terms of ammunition. As with all weapons in TR, it does not suffer from recoil.
This is the gun you want if you have to take down enemies quickly. While the "per bullet damage" isn't that great you have to remember that the refire rate still makes this weapon's damage devastating, if only you use the chaingun the right way. If the chaingun is fired for long periods, check for overheating and manage your weapons accordingly.
- Hold down the attack key to empty the full 100 rounds. One click (a salvo) will fire a burst of 4 shots. Like with other weapons you get the most damage while crouching. The MG has no refire counter, so you can just hold down the button and hose down your entire magazine in one shot if you want.
- One tactic informally known as "MG rushing" is opening up on an enemy and to keep shooting continually as you are moving towards him and getting closer. While the first salvoes will be of minimal damage, by the fourth or fifth salvo your reticule will have closed enough that you will be doing standard damage on the targeted enemy. This is extremely useful as you duck in and out of cover while shooting/closing on an enemy who is over the 30 meters range cap . It is, however, somewhat costly in ammunition.
- As with all things, improved skill gives great benefits, and the improved cooldown starting at level 3 is VERY useful, especially if you get in the habit of gonzo MG rushing and being known as "One of them MG maniacs" in general.
- If you're seriously considering using chainguns for a considerable period of your career, you are best off cranking MG up to at least four due to the cooling bonus. Unless a chaingun is severely damaged and worn out, it will never overheat unless you are constantly firing for several minutes.
- Combine your high MG skill with Rage. It's entirely possible to start mowing down smaller squads of Thrax soldiers within a single reload.
- Due to the ammo cost, new players may consider sticking to low fire rate, but high single bullet damage weapons such as rifles, or reserving the machine gun for single targets with lots of health and armor. However, players with another high level character will have accumulated more credits and will be more readily able to afford chain guns.
- When combined with Shredder Ammo 3, Sonic (Sniper ability) a chain gun gains the ability to knock back targets that live long enough for a Sonic knock back to occur. This is very useful for high DPS bosses who can be knocked back, reducing the incoming dps from the boss by utilizing the Sonic properties of SA3 to achieve knockback using a very high DPS weapon that ordinarily doesn't have it. This is another reason chain gun is a very interesting weapon of choice over firearms for a sniper's close range support weapon.
[edit] "Big Bertha"
- Main article: "Big Bertha"
"Big Bertha" is a considerably powerful named chaingun usable at level 18, obtained as a reward for the mission Pretty, Shiny Things, given by Sergeant Major Ngyen in Irendas Penal Colony, Plains.
